6 Tips for Tackling Time Management

LNE Consulting shares a list of their favorite time management tips.

No matter what career you’re pursuing, chances are that you’ve struggled with time management at least once or twice. Billy Joel said it best in “Vienna,” “You’ve got so much to do and only so many hours in a day.” As with all skills, mastering time management is a process of determining the tactics that work best for you—and then practicing until you perfect them! That’s why the LNE Consulting team has put together a list of 6 of our favorite techniques for making the most out of the work day, try them out!

1. Get a good night’s sleep

The average adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep each night. It’s impossible for your body to operate at peak performance when it isn’t getting the rest that it needs. Taking the time to recharge physically and mentally is essential before a busy day!

2. Avoid multitasking

While you may feel like you’re getting more done by juggling multiple tasks at once, the truth is that multitasking is most likely slowing you down. Try to focus on one thing at a time and devote your full attention to completing the task at hand before you begin another.

3. Prioritize!

This may seem like an obvious one, but it can be tempting to try and to finish quick, menial assignments first in order to gain a sense of accomplishment. Completing the most important two or three items on your to-do list first will prevent you from feeling rushed or stressed as deadlines approach, and ensure that you have enough time to do them well.

4. Start your day early

While you may not love the idea of losing sleep, getting up just an hour early each day gives you 365 more hours each year to get work done! Just make sure that you’re going to bed an hour earlier too in order to still get those 7-8 hours of sleep each night

5. Set a time limit for each task

If perfectionism or extreme attention to detail is slowing you down, try setting a timer to increase your sense of urgency for the task. Try to finish the entire job in the allotted time, and then allow yourself to go back and make revisions after.

6. Break down large projects

Sometimes the thought of starting a big project can seem daunting, and may even cause to procrastinate and put off getting to work on it. Try splitting up larger projects into a series of smaller tasks. Each time you complete a smaller task, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment, giving you the motivation to finish the rest!
